Panel: What’s the story with narrative game development?

Narrative games are more popular than ever. But how do you pick the right tools for the job? How do you get started with the tools you pick? How do you onboard writers and game developers? How do you work with narrative writers when they come from other media, and are used to different workflows?

There’s many challenging questions about the path through narrative game development tools!

In this panel, we’ll discuss the options, exploring their strengths, weaknesses, and accessibility pros and cons. We’ll talk about how you can get started with the tools you pick, and the current state of the art and industry directions for new tools. We’ll also explore which options are more accessible, and which are best for less technical writing teams, and can help with other features of your game, like localisation and translations.

The session will touch on Twine, Ink, Yarn Spinner, Fungus, and many others. By the end of the panel you’ll understand the narrative game development tool landscape, and you’ll be confident that you know how to pick the right tools for your games, and what sort of skills and capabilities you’ll need, and have, with the tools at hand.

The panel will be useful for regardless of the game engines you use.
